Through his company, Australasia Tourism Research Observatory, he provides independent consultancy, commissioned research and strategic advisory services, combining internationally recognised academic expertise with practical experience across government, industry and higher education.

Professor Cheer has undertaken consultancy, research and advisory work for organisations including:

• World Economic Forum – Former Co-Chair of the Global Future Council on the Future of Sustainable Tourism and continuing adviser to the Travel, Tourism & Aviation Expert Group.

• UN Tourism – Consultant and Advisory Board Member.

• Australian Government (DFAT) – Tourism adviser supporting capacity building and tourism development across the Pacific.

• Tourism Research Australia - Examined the potential for Chinese inbound tourism to rural Australia.
